Work first suits most software roles, since experience is what employers value and you can study later with savings and clarity. A master's makes sense for research, specialisation, immigration, or a genuine field change.
The default for software roles
Worth stating plainly because it contradicts a lot of family expectation: for most software engineering jobs, a master's degree is not required and does not substantially increase starting pay.
Employers hiring developers assess what you can build. Two years of work experience is generally weighted more heavily than two years of coursework, and it pays you rather than costing you.
This is different from fields where a postgraduate qualification is the entry ticket. In software it is one path among several, and frequently not the most direct one.
That does not make it wrong. It means the burden of justification sits with the degree — you should be able to say what specifically it gives you that two years of work would not.
Reasons that genuinely justify it
- Research, or a PhD later. A master's is the standard route, and there is no equivalent through industry.
- A specialisation with real depth requirements — machine learning research, computer vision, distributed systems theory, cryptography. Not "I want to work with ML", which is frequently achievable through projects and work, but genuinely research-adjacent roles.
- Immigration. For many countries, a local degree is a well-defined route to working there, with post-study work rights. This is a legitimate and common reason, and it is worth being honest that it is the reason.
- Changing fields. Moving into computer science from another discipline, where a structured programme provides both knowledge and credibility.
- A specific programme or research group you want to work with. A named reason, not a category.
What these share: a specific outcome the degree provides that work does not.
Reasons that usually disappoint
Said directly, because these are common and expensive.
"I did not get a good placement." A master's postpones the problem by two years and adds cost. If interviews are the difficulty, targeted preparation and projects address it far more cheaply. Applying off-campus works, and campus placement is not the only route.
"Everyone is doing it." Not a reason.
"It will get me a higher salary." For most software roles, the premium is small and does not recover the cost plus two years of foregone earnings for a long time.
"I am not sure what I want to do." An expensive way to defer the question, and coursework rarely resolves it. Working usually clarifies preferences faster.
Family expectation alone. A real pressure, and worth discussing honestly with actual numbers rather than complying silently. It is your debt and your two years.
Do the arithmetic honestly
The decision becomes clearer with concrete figures rather than vague sense.
Total the direct cost — tuition, living expenses, travel — and add the foregone salary for the duration, which people consistently omit. Two years not earning is part of the price.
Against that, estimate the realistic outcome: what roles open, what they pay, and how likely you are to get one. Use actual placement data from the specific programme, not the university's marketing, and speak to people who finished it recently rather than to admissions staff.
If it is funded — an assistantship, a scholarship, or an employer paying — the arithmetic changes completely, and a funded programme is a much easier decision.
For loan-funded study abroad, be specific about the repayment period under a realistic salary, including the possibility of not securing work in that country. Immigration rules change, and plans that depend on them carry risk that should be named rather than assumed away.
The options people forget
It is not a binary.
Work first, study later. Very common and frequently the strongest option. You arrive with savings, clearer goals, and experience that makes coursework more meaningful. Some employers fund it, and many good programmes prefer applicants with experience.
Part-time or online postgraduate study while working. Longer and harder, and it avoids the income gap entirely.

One closing point: this decision is reversible. People study after working, leave jobs to study, and return to industry after research. Treating it as a permanent, single choice adds pressure the decision does not deserve.
