How to approach the Class 10 board year

The first exam that follows you

Class 10 is most students' first board examination, and the result is used for streaming into Science, Commerce or Humanities. That makes it consequential, but it is worth being clear about what actually changes: the syllabus is not dramatically harder than Class 9, the paper is set externally rather than by your own school, and the questions are drawn from a published, finite syllabus. The difficulty is one of coverage and precision, not of sudden conceptual difficulty.

Where the marks concentrate

In Science, three areas repay attention out of proportion to their length. Chemical reactions and equations must be balanced correctly and with state symbols, because marks are lost on presentation rather than chemistry. Electricity is heavily numerical, and once you can apply Ohm's law confidently to series and parallel combinations, a large block of the paper becomes routine. Light — reflection and refraction — is the chapter where ray diagrams are examined, and a diagram drawn with the wrong sign convention loses marks even when the description is right.

In Maths, trigonometry and its applications, coordinate geometry, and quadratic equations together account for a substantial share of the paper, and all three are procedural: they reward practised technique rather than insight. Surface areas and volumes is the chapter students most often leave until last and most often regret leaving.

Working through this material

Each chapter here pairs notes with an interactive where seeing the relationship helps — ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses, circuit behaviour, the graph of a quadratic — and follows with practice questions. Use the simulations to check that your mental model is right, then close them and work on paper, because the exam is written.

Two habits matter more than any single chapter. First, write full solutions rather than final answers; board marking awards method, and a correct answer with no working scores poorly. Second, attempt previous years' questions under timed conditions well before the exam, since the constraint on the day is usually time and legibility rather than knowledge.
