Making Class 12 count twice

Two examinations, one syllabus

Class 12 is unusual in that the same material is examined in two quite different ways. The board paper rewards complete, well-presented derivations and standard questions answered in full. Entrance examinations reward speed and problem selection on multiple-choice questions drawn from the same syllabus but combined in unfamiliar ways.

The mistake is treating these as two separate preparations. The underlying content is shared; what differs is practice format. Build the concept once, properly, then practise it in both formats — long-form for the board, timed and objective for entrance papers.

Where the weight sits

In Physics, electrostatics and current electricity together form a large block, and both are heavily numerical. Moving charges and magnetism, electromagnetic induction and alternating current form a single connected story about changing fields, and understanding them as one topic is far easier than memorising three. Optics is reliably examined and reliably scoring. Dual nature and atoms and nuclei are comparatively short chapters with a high mark-per-page return.

In Chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics and solutions carry most of the numerical marks in physical chemistry. Organic chemistry rewards learning reaction mechanisms rather than isolated conversions — once you can reason about why a reagent behaves as it does, the number of things to remember collapses. Coordination compounds and the d-block are dense but predictable.

In Maths, calculus dominates: continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, integrals and their applications, and differential equations. Vectors and three-dimensional geometry are closely related and best studied together. Probability, particularly Bayes' theorem, is a standard source of questions that look harder than they are.

Working through this material

Each chapter here pairs notes with an interactive for the topics where a picture does the explaining — the LCR resonance curve, the photoelectric graph, the definite integral as a limit of rectangles, the probability tree — and follows with practice questions.

Two things matter more than any individual chapter this year. Write derivations out in full at least once for every standard result, because the board paper asks for them and recognition is not the same as reproduction. And solve previous years' papers under timed conditions early enough that you can still act on what they reveal.
