So when Clarke writes about people living and working in orbit, he is writing as somebody who had thought hard about how such a place would really have to be run.

The setting. The story takes place on a space station in orbit around the Earth, and the station is still being built. There is no gravity, so people and objects float rather than fall. Because the station sits in permanent sunlight, there is no real day or night at all; the crew keep the words day and night only because the terms are convenient, and they work twelve-hour watches. The narrator remarks that you need little sleep in space, and we learn that the crew sleep strapped into their bunks.

One fact about this setting matters more than any other, and the whole story rests on it. The station's air is sealed in. It cannot blow away and be replaced by a fresh breeze, because there is nothing outside but vacuum. Machinery has to clean that same air over and over again and keep it fit to breathe. On Earth, bad air disperses. Inside a sealed metal box, bad air simply stays there and slowly gets worse.

The narrator. The story is told in the first person by a member of the crew who is never given a name. His job is office work: he goes through lists of technical stores to work out what the station will run short of next, and he does it in a space so small that he calls it his office as a joke. The story claims no special skill, rank or authority for him at all — we are simply never told of any. What he does show is attention and memory, and in this story that turns out to matter more than anything on the equipment list.

The title. The phrase feathered friend is an ordinary, slightly playful way of talking about a pet bird. It sounds harmless and a little comic, and for most of the story that is exactly how the bird is treated. By the last page the same phrase has quietly become literally true, because the bird turns out to be the most dependable friend the crew have.

What happens, step by step

How the bird comes to be there. The story opens with the narrator pointing out that no rule has ever forbidden pets on a space station, simply because nobody ever imagined such a rule would be needed. That single remark tells us what kind of man Sven is before we have seen him do anything.

Sven is thin but strong — wiry, as the story puts it — like most of the early spacers, and that build is an advantage: he qualifies easily for the “150-pound bonus” that keeps so many of the crew on a “reducing diet”. A heavier man, the narrator says, would have stood almost no chance of being hired for work in orbit at all. He is also one of the station's finest construction men. His job is to catch steel girders as they drift about in free fall, guide them into position, and join them together once they fit exactly — work the narrator describes as a slow-motion, “three-dimensional ballet”, made harder by the fact that a space suit is an awkward thing to work in. The narrator notes one advantage Sven's team has over builders on Earth: they can step back and admire what they have made without gravity snatching it away from them.

The narrator meets Claribel. He is at his desk going through his stores lists when a musical whistle sounds beside his ear. He assumes it has come over the station intercom and waits for an announcement to follow. Instead the whistling turns into a long, winding tune. He looks up so sharply that he forgets the angle beam behind his head and cracks it — and once he has stopped seeing stars, he gets his first look at Claribel: a small yellow canary hanging in the air as still as a hummingbird, with her wings folded neatly at her sides. The two of them stare at each other. Then she performs a curious sort of backward loop that the narrator is sure no canary on Earth ever managed, and drifts off with a few unhurried flicks of her wings. She has plainly worked out how to live without gravity, and she has no intention of doing more work than she needs to.

Life aboard with a stowaway. Sven does not admit for several days that the bird is his, and by then it hardly matters, because Claribel has become “a general pet” belonging to everybody. Sven eventually explains that he smuggled her up on the last ferry from Earth after his leave, partly — he claims — out of “sheer scientific curiosity”: he wanted to find out how a bird would get about once its body weighed nothing at all, while its wings went on working exactly as before. Claribel settles in so well that she “thrived and grew fat”. Hiding her from important visitors from Earth is easier than it sounds, because a space station has more hiding places than anyone can count. The difficulty is that she becomes noisy when she is upset, and the crew have to think quickly to explain the peeps and whistles coming out of the air ducts and compartment walls. There are one or two close calls — but as the narrator points out, who would ever think of searching a space station for a canary?

The morning everything changes. The narrator wakes with a nagging headache and a vague memory of broken, restless dreams. It takes him a long time to undo his bunk straps and he is still half asleep when he reaches the mess for breakfast. The meal is unusually quiet, and one seat is empty. Sven, it turns out, is searching for Claribel, who normally wakes him up. Then Sven comes in, and everyone can see at once that something is wrong. He opens his hand, and in it lies a small huddle of yellow feathers, the claws curled tight and pointing pathetically upwards. He says only that he found her like this.

Oxygen, and a second collapse. Jock Duncan, who serves as the station's cook, doctor and dietitian all at once, holds the bird against his ear to listen for a heartbeat while everyone waits in silence. He shakes his head: he can hear nothing, though he admits, rather apologetically, that he has never listened to a canary's heart before and so cannot be sure. Somebody suggests giving her oxygen from the emergency cylinder by the door, and Claribel is tucked into a face mask so large that it works as a complete oxygen tent for a bird her size. To everyone's delight she revives immediately. Sven, beaming, takes the mask off and she hops onto his finger and trills her usual tune — and then keels straight over again.

The realisation. Something has been nagging at the narrator's memory. His own mind feels slow and heavy, as though he cannot shake off sleep, and he thinks he could do with a turn on the oxygen himself. Then it comes to him all at once. He rounds on Jim, the duty engineer, and tells him there is something wrong with the air — that is why Claribel has passed out — because he has just remembered that miners used to carry canaries down with them as a warning against gas.

Jim checks. Jim's first reaction is a flat “Nonsense!”: the alarms would have gone off, and there are duplicate circuits working independently of each other. His assistant then quietly reminds him that the second alarm circuit has not been connected up yet. That stops Jim dead, and he leaves without a word, while the others stand about arguing and passing the oxygen bottle round like a “pipe of peace”. He comes back ten minutes later with a “sheepish expression”. In the night the station had passed through the Earth's shadow in one of its rare eclipses, and part of the air purifier had frozen up and stopped working. The one alarm actually wired into the circuit never sounded. Chemical and electronic engineering costing half a million dollars had failed the crew completely. Without Claribel, the narrator says, they would soon have been “slightly dead”.

The ending. The story closes on a comfortable, faintly amused thought. If you ever visit a space station and hear a snatch of birdsong you cannot explain, there is no reason to be alarmed — quite the opposite. It means the crew are being “doubly safeguarded”, at almost no extra cost. What began as a smuggled secret has become an accepted precaution.

The people and the bird

Sven Olsen is one of the station's best construction men. He is wiry and light, which is exactly what the job wants, and he is extremely good at the delicate business of catching drifting girders and fusing them into place while wearing a space suit. He is also the one who brings Claribel aboard. He offers a scientific reason for it — curiosity about how a bird flies without weight — and that reason is genuinely interesting. But notice how he behaves when she collapses: he has been out searching for her, he carries her in his cupped hand, he sounds miserable, and he beams when she revives. The scientific explanation is real enough, but it is not the whole story. He wanted living company inside a metal box a long way from home, and the text lets us see that without ever saying it directly.

Claribel is a small yellow canary, and she is far more than decoration. She is the character who changes everything without ever meaning to. She weighs almost nothing and eats very little, so she costs the station nothing worth counting. She adapts to weightlessness beautifully, folding her wings and hanging in the air, looping backwards, and moving with a lazy economy that no canary on Earth could copy. She is cheerful and noisy, and the crew grow fond of her. Then, because a small fast-breathing body reacts to bad air far sooner than a human body does, her collapse becomes the warning that keeps everyone alive. It is worth being precise here: Claribel does not act bravely and does not decide anything. She saves the crew simply by being what she is.

Jock Duncan is described as the crew's cook, doctor and dietitian rolled into one, which tells you a great deal about how a small station has to work — there are too few people aboard for anyone to hold only one job. His moment in the story is a small but honest one. Asked to examine Claribel, he listens for a heartbeat, hears nothing, and then says plainly that hearing nothing does not prove she is dead, because he has never listened to a canary's heart in his life. That is a scientist's answer rather than a confident guess, and it is the right one.

Jim is the duty engineer, and he matters because of how he first reacts. He rejects the narrator's warning outright: the alarms would have sounded, and there are two independent circuits. His position is perfectly reasonable — it is what most sensible people would say, and he is not written as a fool. What makes him worth admiring is what he does next. Once his assistant points out that the backup circuit is not connected, Jim says nothing at all and simply goes to look. He returns embarrassed, and he does not try to argue the fault away.

Jim's assistant speaks only once and is not named, but his single interruption is the hinge of the whole rescue. He is the person who knows that the second alarm circuit has not been wired up yet, and he says so at the moment it counts. Without him, Jim would very likely have gone on trusting a safety system that was not finished.

Look at how the credit is spread out. Sven brings the bird for reasons that are half scientific and half sentimental. Claribel gives the signal without knowing it. The narrator supplies the memory. The assistant supplies the missing fact. Jim supplies the check and the repair. Nobody rescues the station single-handed, and nobody is made to look stupid.

The canary clue and the science behind it

A canary is tiny and breathes very fast. For its size it takes in far more air than we do, so it feels the effects of bad air long before a grown man notices anything much at all. If the bird stopped singing or fell off its perch, the miners knew to get out immediately. The bird was, in effect, a living alarm, and a very reliable one. The story itself gives only the bare fact — the narrator simply recalls the old practice of taking canaries into a mine as a warning against gas — and everything above is the background that makes that remark make sense. Printed beside the story, as further reading rather than as part of it, the book adds that coal miners in places like Arunachal Pradesh used canaries to detect carbon monoxide, since these little birds are especially sensitive to it and so could prevent mining accidents. Why the same idea works in orbit. Clarke takes that old mining practice and lifts it straight up into space. A sealed station has the same problem as a mine, only sharper. The air inside is all the air there is. It must be cleaned and recirculated continuously by an air purifier. If that machine stops working properly, the air slowly stops being fit to breathe, and there is no window to open and no wind to carry the problem away.

It is worth being careful about one detail here, because it is easy to get wrong: the story never tells us which gas was to blame. All we are told is that part of the air purifier froze during the eclipse and that the alarm did not go off. What the text does describe are the effects on the crew — a nagging headache, restless and broken sleep, heaviness, and a mind too sluggish to think clearly. The narrator himself is so slow that morning that the answer takes several minutes to surface, and he notices that he feels like having some of the oxygen himself. So we can say confidently that the air had gone bad and that it was affecting the crew's bodies and thinking. We should not invent a name for the gas that the author chose not to give.

Why the danger was so nearly missed. This is the cleverest part of the situation, and it is the reason the story still works. The crew are not careless or stupid. The trap is that the early signs of bad air feel exactly like the signs of an ordinary long shift: tiredness, a headache, poor sleep, slow thinking. Anybody working twelve-hour watches would blame overwork and get on with the day, which is precisely what they nearly do. A danger that disguises itself as normal tiredness is far more frightening than one that announces itself. Claribel has no option to shrug it off. She simply falls over.

Why the bird has to collapse twice. This detail is easy to skim past, and it is doing real work. A single collapse proves very little — the bird might be ill, or old, or injured. What makes the evidence readable is the sequence: she collapses, oxygen revives her at once, and then, back in the ordinary cabin air, she keels over again. Change one thing, watch what happens, change it back, watch again. That is the shape of a simple experiment, and it is what turns a vague worry into something a person can act on. It is also what allows the narrator's half-buried memory of the mines to click into place instead of drifting away.

So the chapter is not asking you to believe that birds are magical. It is asking you to see that a living body is itself a kind of instrument — one with no circuit that can come loose and no switch that can be left unconnected.

Living things can notice what instruments miss. This is the story's central idea, but it needs stating carefully, because it is very easy to overstate. He is making a narrower and far more interesting point: a safety system protects you only to the extent that it is actually working and actually finished. The alarm was a perfectly sound design. It simply failed, and the backup that should have covered that failure had not been connected yet. Claribel had no such gap in her, because she did not depend on a circuit at all.

Small things are not the same as unimportant things. Claribel arrives almost as a joke. She weighs nothing, does no work, contributes nothing anyone can measure, and has to be hidden away from visitors like a mild embarrassment. By the end she has done what an entire arrangement of sensors and alarms failed to do. The story quietly invites you to look again at something you had already written off — and that habit of looking again is useful well beyond space stations.

Attention and memory matter as much as expertise. The crisis is not solved by inventing anything or by any clever piece of technical skill. It is solved because one ordinary person connects two facts that have nothing obviously to do with each other: a bird keeps fainting, and miners once carried birds underground to warn them of gas. The real lesson is not that he was wrong to doubt; it is that he went and checked anyway. Someone who tests an odd-sounding claim instead of dismissing it is a large part of the reason everybody survives. Being wrong is not the failure in this story. Refusing to look would have been.

Systems fail quietly. Notice how nothing dramatic happens. No explosion, no warning light, no shouting. A component freezes in the cold, an alarm stays silent, and a job that was never finished stays unfinished. The most dangerous faults are often the ones that make no noise, and this is the sharpest practical warning in the chapter.

Companionship has a value of its own. Sven's scientific reason is fairly clearly a respectable cover for wanting something alive and cheerful nearby. The story treats this warmly instead of laughing at it — and then goes on to prove that the soft, unscientific decision turned out to be the most practical thing anybody on that station did.

Curiosity pays off in ways nobody plans. Sven brought Claribel partly because he wanted to find something out. The narrator saved the crew by remembering something he had once found out. Neither piece of curiosity was aimed at the problem it eventually solved. For a story about science and curiosity, that is the neatest point of all: knowing things, and wanting to know things, tends to become useful in ways you could never have arranged in advance.

How the story is told

We are told the crew hide her from visitors, which makes her seem harmless and faintly comic. We are told that she gets noisy when upset. Understatement and dry humour. The story is funny in a restrained, straight-faced way. When the narrator says that without the bird they would soon have been “slightly dead”, the joke lives entirely in the word slightly, because being dead is not something you can be a little bit of. Playing down something enormous is a standard way of being funny in English, and here it does a second job as well: it tells you what these people are like. They work in a place that could kill them and they stay calm about it. The crew passing the oxygen bottle round like a “pipe of peace” is the same kind of humour, and so is Jim returning with a “sheepish expression” — an entire near-disaster summed up in one embarrassed face.

Comic touches that also carry information. Look at the narrator banging his head on a beam because a canary startled him, or his remark that Sven's team can admire their work without gravity taking it away from them. These are jokes, but each one is also teaching you something about weightlessness without stopping to explain it. That is efficient writing.

Science fiction that stays honest. Clarke does not invent a monster or reach for a magical solution. Every link in the chain is something that could genuinely go wrong: a shadow, a drop in temperature, a component freezing, air going bad, an alarm that failed, a backup that was never wired up. That restraint is exactly what makes the danger feel real instead of cartoonish, and it is a large part of why the story has lasted so long.

Pacing. Look at the shape of the thing. There is a long, light, pleasant stretch in which almost nothing happens except a bird being charming. Then a short, uneasy passage of the crew waking up feeling wrong. Then, in quick succession: the collapse, the oxygen, the second collapse, the memory, the argument, the check and the answer. The story spends most of its length making you relax, and then resolves the whole crisis at speed. That contrast is not an accident; it is the effect.

An ending that circles back. The story opens by telling us there was never any rule about pets because nobody thought one was needed. It closes by suggesting that birdsong aboard a space station is not merely allowable but sensible. What began as a smuggled secret ends as an accepted precaution. Explain the middle, not just the ending. The weakest answers on this story stop at the fact that a canary saved the crew. A full answer explains how, in order: the crew woke feeling slow and headachy, Sven found Claribel collapsed, oxygen revived her, she collapsed a second time, the narrator remembered the mine canaries, the assistant revealed that the backup alarm circuit was unconnected, Jim went and checked despite doubting it, and the frozen air purifier and the silent alarm came to light. That chain is what a complete answer needs.

Keep the people straight. This is the easiest place to lose an otherwise good answer. The narrator is the one who remembers the miners and pushes for a check. Sven Olsen brought the bird aboard and is holding her when she collapses. Jock Duncan is the cook, doctor and dietitian who listens for a heartbeat. Jim is the duty engineer who doubts first and checks second. It is Jim's assistant, not Jim, who reveals that the second alarm circuit was never connected.

Separate narration from speech. When you are given a short extract and asked who is speaking, decide first whether the words are reporting events from outside a conversation — which points to the narrator — or whether they are part of an exchange between people, which points to a named character such as Sven or Jim. The flat refusal that begins with Nonsense is Jim's, not the narrator's.

On the title question. If you are asked whether the title suits the story, do not simply answer yes. Show that it works on two levels: it is the ordinary affectionate phrase for a pet bird, and it also turns out to describe a real friend, because the bird's collapse is what keeps the crew alive.

On the message question. Avoid the flat answer that machines are bad. Say instead that machines can fail silently, without announcing it, and that a living creature — or an alert, thinking person — can catch what a broken instrument is simply unable to report.

Do not invent what the text does not say. Two things in particular are worth resisting. The story does not name the gas that built up, and it does not tell us what finally became of Claribel after her second collapse. Writing about what the air did to the crew is accurate; naming a gas or announcing that the bird made a full recovery is not.

A wider link. Alongside the story, as further reading rather than as part of it, the book introduces Salim Ali, the ornithologist — a person who studies birds — known as the Birdman of India. No Indian before him had carried out systematic bird surveys of the whole country, and he wrote a number of books about birds; in 1958 he received the Padma Bhushan, and in 1976 the Padma Vibhushan. He is a fitting companion to a story in which paying close attention to one small bird turns out to matter enormously, but he does not appear in the story, so do not bring him into an answer about the plot.

1 Why did the narrator think Sven had sneaked a bird aboard? What was Sven's scientific reason?

On the first part the narrator is refreshingly honest: he says he cannot tell us. He is not a psychologist, he explains, and he will not guess at why Sven wanted a pet at all, or why he chose the one he did. What he is willing to say is that Sven's choice was a very sensible one, and he gives practical reasons for that view. Claribel weighed practically nothing and her food needs were tiny, so she was no burden on the station's supplies; and, unlike most animals, she was not troubled by the absence of gravity.

He also had plain evidence that a bird was aboard well before Sven owned up. A musical whistle sounded beside his ear in his office, and when he looked up there was a live canary hanging in the air. Sven did not confess to owning her for several days, and by then it no longer mattered, because Claribel had become the whole crew's pet. Strictly speaking, Sven had broken no rule: the story opens by telling us that no regulation forbidding pets on a space station ever existed, since nobody thought one was needed — though the narrator is quite certain Sven would have ignored such a rule anyway.

Sven's scientific reason. Returning from leave, Sven had brought Claribel aboard in secret on the final ferry out of Earth, and he claimed he had done it partly out of “sheer scientific curiosity”. He wanted to find out how a bird would get about once its body weighed nothing at all, while its wings went on working exactly as before. That is a genuinely interesting question, and it gave him a respectable answer to offer his colleagues.

All the same, the story lets us see that curiosity was not the whole truth. Notice the word partly. Notice, too, how Sven behaves when Claribel collapses: he has been out searching for her, he carries her carefully in his hand, he sounds thoroughly miserable, and he beams with relief the moment she revives. Curiosity was part of it; wanting something alive and cheerful nearby was the rest.

2 How did Claribel adjust to the new surroundings?

She adjusted far better than anyone had expected, and much better than most animals would have done. The narrator notes that she was simply not troubled by the absence of gravity in the way another creature would have been.

Two practical things made her easy to keep. She weighed almost nothing, and she needed very little food, so she made no real demand on the station's carefully counted supplies. In fact she settled in so comfortably that she thrived and grew fat.

The most striking change was in the way she flew. On Earth a bird must fight gravity with every stroke of its wings. On the station there was nothing pulling her down, so she could hang in the air completely still, with her wings folded quietly along her sides, looking like a hummingbird but without any of the effort. She could loop backwards in a way no bird on the ground could manage, and then drift off with a few unhurried flicks of her wings. As the narrator puts it, she had plainly worked out how to get about without gravity and saw no point in unnecessary effort.

She also stayed her noisy, cheerful self, whistling and chirping about the station, which is what made hiding her from visitors such a problem.

3 What made the narrator mistake the musical whistle for a sound from the intercom?

Because birdsong is not a sound the mind is prepared for on a space station. The narrator was sitting in the tiny space he jokingly calls his office, working through his lists of technical stores, when a musical whistle sounded right beside his ear. His brain reached for the likeliest available explanation, and in a space station the likeliest source of a sound like that is the intercom, the internal speaker system used for talking between different parts of the station. So he put the whistle down to the intercom and sat waiting for the announcement he expected to hear next.

No announcement came. Instead the whistle developed into a long and complicated tune, which is not at all what a speaker system does, and that is what finally made him look up so sharply that he cracked his head on the beam behind him.

The moment is doing more work than it first appears. It shows how we make sense of what we hear by fitting it into what we already expect, and how easily we explain away something that does not belong. That is exactly the same habit of mind that nearly costs the crew their lives later on, when they blame their headaches and heaviness on overwork instead of asking what else might explain them.

4 What was the purpose of the alarm? What had caused its failure?

The alarm system existed to warn the crew if anything went wrong with the station's air. On a sealed station this is one of the most important safety devices there can be, because the air inside is all the air there is, and if it stops being fit to breathe there is no window to open and no wind to blow the problem away.

Jim, the duty engineer, was quite right to say that the station was well provided for. There were supposed to be duplicate circuits, working independently of each other, so that if one failed the other would still sound. The failure had two parts.

First, during the night the station had passed through the Earth's shadow in one of its rare eclipses. Sunlight was cut off, the temperature dropped, and part of the air purifier froze up and stopped doing its job. Second, the single alarm that was actually wired into the circuit failed to go off, and the second alarm circuit, which was meant to be the backup, had not been connected up yet. The station was still being built and that piece of work was simply unfinished.

So a safety installation costing half a million dollars told the crew nothing whatever, and the only warning they received came from a canary.

5 How does the crew's reaction to Claribel change over the course of the story?

The change is one of the most satisfying things in the story.

At the beginning she is a secret and something of a joke. She has been smuggled aboard without anybody else on the station knowing — though, as the story is careful to establish at the start, there was no rule about pets for Sven to break. She is tolerated and then genuinely liked, because she weighs nothing, eats almost nothing and cheers everybody up, and within days she has stopped being Sven's bird and become the whole crew's pet. But she is still something to be hidden. Whenever important visitors come up from Earth she is tucked away out of sight, and the crew have to invent quick explanations for the peeps and whistles coming from the air ducts. She is treated, in short, as a pleasant irrelevance and a mild embarrassment.

After the crisis that changes completely. She is no longer a pet who has to be explained away; she is the reason the crew are still alive. The story ends with the idea that a visitor to a space station who hears an unexplained snatch of birdsong should not be startled at all, but reassured, because it means the people aboard are being guarded twice over at almost no extra cost. What was a smuggled secret has become an accepted precaution.

6 Justify the appropriateness of the title of the story.

The title is well chosen because it works on two levels at once, and the story moves the reader from one to the other.

On the surface it is a light, affectionate everyday phrase. People often call a pet bird a feathered friend, and the words carry a warm, faintly comic feeling. That suits the first half of the story exactly, where Claribel is a charming secret who hangs in the air, loops backwards, sings at inconvenient moments and has to be hidden from visitors. At that stage the title promises a pleasant little story about a pet.

By the end the same phrase has become true in a far more serious sense. Claribel is not merely a bird whom the crew fondly call a friend. She is a friend in the fullest meaning of the word, because her collapse is the only warning the crew get that the air has gone bad. The expensive alarm system said nothing. She said everything, simply by falling over.

So the title quietly changes weight as the story goes on. It begins as an affectionate joke and ends as a plain statement of fact, and that shift is exactly the journey the story wants the reader to take.

7 'Without Claribel, we should soon have been slightly dead.' What does this line suggest about the uncertainty of life in space?

Taken literally the phrase makes no sense, and that is the joke. Death is not a matter of degree, so nobody can be a little bit dead. By attaching a mild, casual word to something absolute, the narrator deliberately plays down a disaster that came extremely close.

What the line suggests about life in space is serious enough. It tells us how thin the margin is. The crew were not attacked and nothing exploded. A component quietly froze because a shadow fell across the station, an alarm quietly failed, and a piece of wiring had never been finished. Out of those small, undramatic facts came a situation that could have killed everybody aboard while they slept.

It also shows how completely life in space depends on machinery working properly. On Earth, bad air disperses on its own. In orbit there is no such mercy, and human survival rests entirely on equipment that people have built, connected and maintained correctly.

Finally, the tone of the remark tells us something about the crew. Understating a near-disaster in this dry way is how people who work in dangerous places talk about danger. They know the risk perfectly well, and they refuse to be dramatic about it.

8 Explain how the writer has presented science fiction with a touch of humour.

Clarke keeps the science honest and lets the humour come from the people.

The science fiction side is completely serious. Every link in the chain of events is something that could genuinely happen: the station passes into shadow, the temperature falls, part of the air purifier freezes, the air slowly goes bad, an alarm fails, and a backup circuit was never connected. There is no monster and no magical rescue, and that restraint is what makes the danger feel real.

The humour is laid over the top of it, always dry and understated. The narrator remarks that Sven's team can step back and admire their handiwork without gravity taking it away from them, which is funny and also teaches the reader something about weightlessness. He is so startled by a canary that he bangs his head on a beam. He observes that nobody would ever dream of searching a space station for a canary. The crew stand about passing the oxygen bottle round like a pipe of peace. Jim comes back from his inspection with a sheepish expression, and an entire near-catastrophe is conveyed by one embarrassed face. Best of all is the remark that without the bird they would soon have been slightly dead.

The mixture works because the jokes never undercut the danger. They tell us instead what kind of people these are: calm, practical and used to working somewhere that could kill them.

The story says the news shook Jim, and his response is much to his credit. He did not argue and he did not defend himself. He left without a word to go and check, and came back ten minutes later, looking embarrassed, with the fault found.

There is clear support for the idea. The station carried a purpose-built alarm system designed to detect exactly this danger, and it told the crew absolutely nothing. A canary who had been brought aboard for no safety purpose whatever gave a perfectly clear warning simply by fainting. Put like that, a small living creature plainly outperformed equipment that had cost half a million dollars to design and build.

But the claim needs care, because the story is more balanced than the slogan suggests. Everything about that station is technology, and the crew are alive in orbit only because of it. They breathe because a machine cleans their air, and it is a machine that revives Claribel when they give her oxygen. Clarke is not attacking technology.

What he is pointing at is something narrower and more useful. The alarm did not fail because alarms are a bad idea; it failed because one component froze and because the backup circuit had never been wired up. That is a human failure of finishing and checking, not a failure of engineering as such. Claribel was reliable because she had no circuit to come loose.

So I would agree only in a limited sense. The story does not say that nature beats technology. It says that a safety system protects you only as far as it is genuinely working and genuinely complete, and that a living creature, or an alert person who notices and remembers, can catch what a broken instrument cannot report.

The narrator is deliberately kept ordinary. He is never even named, and the story claims no special skill or rank for him; his job is going through lists of technical stores in a cubbyhole he calls his office as a joke. What he shows in the crisis is a different set of qualities altogether.

Observation. He does not simply see that the bird is unwell. He registers the whole pattern: the collapse, the immediate recovery on oxygen, and the second collapse straight afterwards. Reading a sequence rather than a single event is what makes the clue readable at all.

Memory, and the ability to connect distant things. Nothing about a space station naturally suggests a coal mine. His contribution is to remember an old practice from a completely different world and recognise that it fits what is in front of him. He also does this while his own thinking is slowed by the very air he is trying to diagnose, which makes it harder still.

Courage to speak up. He does not keep the thought to himself. He turns on the duty engineer, the man whose own field this is, and says urgently that there is something wrong with the air — and although Jim answers him with a flat “Nonsense!”, the matter is not dropped, because the crew stand there arguing until Jim goes off to check.

Honesty. He never claims the credit. He presents the rescue as something the crew managed between them, and gives the real credit to the bird.
