What Kind of Writing This Is

The first thing to settle is what sort of text you are holding. This chapter is not a story, and it is not a poem or a play either. There is no hero, no villain, no plot building towards a twist, and nobody speaks a single line of dialogue. So when the writing sounds excited, curious or amazed, that mood is the writer's own attitude coming through the sentences, and it is aimed straight at you. Keep this distinction clear in your mind, because plenty of other pieces you read in English class do have a narrator who is separate from the author, and mixing the two up is a common slip.

The structure is simple and deliberate. A short opening sets up the big idea: India is home to natural phenomena that surprise us and spark the imagination. The chapter then walks through seven places, giving each one its own compact block of writing. Each block quietly answers the same set of questions, more or less in the same order. A short closing gathers the seven back together and suggests what they add up to.

That repeated pattern is a real gift when you sit down to revise. Instead of memorising seven unconnected paragraphs, build one mental template with four slots in it, and fill that template in seven times. The slots are: the place, the state or region it sits in, the strange behaviour it is famous for, and the reason the text gives for that behaviour. Almost every question the chapter can ask you fits somewhere inside those four slots.

Informational prose Writing whose main aim is to inform and describe rather than to tell a made-up story. Facts, places and explanations do the work that plot and character do in fiction.
Writer, not narrator In non-fiction there is no invented storyteller. The opinions and excitement belong to the writer, so questions about 'the narrator' should be answered as questions about the writer.

And one, the root bridges, stands slightly apart because it is the only wonder in the list that human beings had a hand in making.

Grouping them this way is far more useful than a flat list. If a question asks you to compare two wonders, or to pick the odd one out, or to explain what the seven have in common, you already have the thinking done.

Living things behaving oddly The Valley of Flowers and the glowing backwaters at Kumbalangi both come down to organisms doing something we do not expect plants and tiny sea life to do.
Land holding a secret Lonar Crater Lake and the Magnetic Hill are both about the ground itself. One carries the mark of an ancient impact, the other tricks your eyes about which way the road runs.
Water that will not stay put Chandipur Beach and the Sundarbans are both shaped by tides. The sea moves, and the land and life there are shaped by that movement.

The Valley of Flowers and the Living Root Bridges

Lonar Crater Lake and the Magnetic Hill

Glowing Waters, the Sundarbans and Chandipur Beach

Informational writing can very easily turn into a dull list of facts. This chapter does not, and it is worth working out how it escapes that trap, because questions about the writer's style are perfectly fair game.

The most obvious technique is direct address and questioning. The writing turns towards you and puts questions in front of you rather than simply announcing information. It asks whether you could build a bridge without cement or stone. It asks whether a forest can exist in a coastal zone. It asks whether you have seen things disappearing in front of your eyes. A question does something a statement cannot: it makes your mind reach for an answer before the text supplies one, so by the time the explanation arrives you are already invested in it. It treats you as capable of handling a real word while making sure you are never stranded by one, and you end the chapter owning several useful terms you can use elsewhere.

Gerunds are verb forms ending in -ing used as nouns, as in the sentence about crossing the many waterways being difficult in the past. Spotting them is easier when you remember what job the word is doing in the sentence rather than how it ends.
